Summer Movies

Normally I don't post unless I think it is important that I write, be it to get something off my chest or get an idea out that people, myself included, can ponder. This doesn't fall into either category, but I want to get people as excited about this summer's movies as I am.

I like going to the movies. It's an experience that I don't get by popping a DVD into the player. This is partially because the store bought electronics don't come close to a theater's, but mainly it's because I'm allowed to press the pause button every time I have to use the bathroom or get a popcorn kernel out of my teeth. Unfortunately, this eliminates any kind of mystique that the movie had created. Going to the movies lets the mystique completely develop and gives the best viewing experience of the film. Also, even if I'm going just because someone wanted me to, I get invested in the plot because it gives me the best chance to make my $7.50 worthwhile. I don't buy popcorn because of the kernels but will sometimes buy a Sprite to help me more fully enjoy the experience. I don't go during the first week or two because there are too many crying babies and people telling the actors what to do, even though it's not live. On a side note, what do you think the odds are that the people with the crying babies are the same people yelling at the screen? I'd say it's a solid 50%. To that end, I have something to say to people who bring babies into movie theaters. Don't do it. They can't follow the plot. But maybe they wouldn't be crying so much if you stopped freaking them out by yelling at something that's not there.

Let's see, don't go during the first week...okay, I'm back on track. I haven't had the money or the time to spend on going to the movies in a while, but thankfully there really haven't been many that have piqued my interest. In fact, there have been some that I'm surpised anyone would see, like Blades of Glory. I think that Will Ferrell takes movie roles that are better suited for three minute SNL sketches, and he acts way over the top for an hour and a half. It's just too much for me to stomach.

Fortunately for my viewing pleasure there are two movies that will prove to be astronomically better than Blades of Glory, and I may break my first week rule for both of them. Spider-Man 3 and Transformers will be summer spectacles. Everyone knows that the Spider-Man movies have done very well and are pretty awesome. This installment should be the best since it includes the new and improved Goblin, Venom, and Sandman as antagonists while the perpetual web (nice, right?) connecting Peter and Mary Jane gets stickier. The Transformers have always been awesome and, although there haven't been previous Transformer movies recently to predict the quality of this one, CGI and other fake movie stuff are so much better than the '90s when I last watched the cartoon. This, coupled with the fact that there is a nice storyline to use as a guide (just like the first Spider-Man movie), has me thinking that I will be paying full price for at least two movies in the next 4 months and will not regret it a bit.

Guys, especially guys who were kids in the '80s and early '90s, you know how great these two movies will be. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple of hours remembering your youth. And ladies, there's a reason that these stories have stuck around for decades. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple of hours learning about why guys like this stuff. I am so convinced that you will enjoy those two hours that if you don't I'll figure out some way to make it up to you.
