The Mark of the Beast
I am amazed that so many people are making such a big deal about today's date. Revelation 13:18 specifically states that the number of the Devil is three consecutive sixes, not 6606 or any other close combination. Today's date has no special relevance to anything and nobody needs to take off work because the world will end. Besides, if people are worried about the world ending maybe they should have done something about changing themselves before THE DAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN.
Now that I am finished with the religious part of my argument, I want to be more logical in my approach to rebutting the argument that the world will end on 6/6/06. First, there has been a 6/6/06 many times already and as far as I know nothing world ending or even world changing happened on those days. Second, due to time zones, it is already 6/7/06 in Australia. Now, you may say that time zones were proposed well after the Bible was written and therefore have no bearing on when the world will end. To argue this point I propose my third rebuttal; the modern calendar was also adopted after the Bible was written. Thus, there is no possible way that any of us can identify one specific day as being the same day that the Bible states is the day that the world ends. I don't care if the Bible explicitly states the end of the world or someone found it using some code or matrix, there is absolutely zero chance that anyone can prove that the dates are the same.
So, rest easy America. I cannot tell you when the world will end, but I can guarantee you that the world will not end because the shorthand Roman numeric representation of the date resembles the mark of the beast. So, go ahead spending 200 dollars on a pair of jeans and spending $4.95 on a 16 ounce cup of coffee all the while complaining about the outrageous prices of gas. Continue bemoaning the President and saying that he was a poor choice despite the fact that fewer than 50% of eligible voters participated in the 2004 election. Don't worry about protecting the environment or extending common courtesy to anyone because you only need to worry about you. While tomorrow may not be a guarantee, there is no reason to believe that it is because of a rare occurrence in the calendar; as a result, there's no reason to try to improve yourself or things that you can control. I mean, everything's fine, right? Oh wait...
